8 Things You Should Remind Yourself Before Moving Flats

Moving flats it’s very exciting, but it can also be a pain in the a$$.

Now that I find myself in the middle of the flat-hunting sea, I have been remembering the mistakes I made in the past movings. Reflecting on the near future, there are a few points I want to remember. I hope this list can help me someday and, hopefully, it helps you too!

You Always Have More Stuff Than You Can Remember

Bear in mind that you are going to be surprised by the number of items you have at home. Even the most unexpected items, including small objects you lost months ago.

Every time I move flats, I find myself overwhelmed by random useless pieces around.

Declutter Lovers Finish First!

This is the most important thing you need to do before you start packing. There are many articles you don’t need and some others you probably want to replace.

I got rid of some clothes I wasn’t going to use anymore. “Declutter time” is a wonderful opportunity to be honest with yourself and decide which what’s truly worth keeping.

Sometimes even if those pieces in good shape have stopped bringing joy or service to us.

It’s Never Too Soon To Start Packing

Some recommend starting at least one month before the moving date.

Start with the products you won’t use anymore. For example, accessories and decorative items, continue with video games you have finished and those dusty books you have read.

If you are going to move furniture, decide when is the best moment to disassemble that shelf. You don’t want to be caught the night before the moving with a screwdriver trying to avoid a panic attack.

Change Address

Whether you move to a new country, a new city or you are just switching flats with your neighbour next door, paperwork is a must.

It also is, in my opinion, one of the biggest pains when it comes to moving flats.

Remember to let your bank know about your new address, inform your company too. If you have any magazine subscriptions, call then and let them know where they should send the Cosmopolitan from now on.

Oh, and don’t forget to change the details of your PayPal account! I forgot to do that one and realise my mistake after sending payment for an order that I had to cancel after realising of my mistake.

Is it Permanent Or Temporary?

If it’s temporary, I would suggest getting a furnished place.

Buying new goods only to leave after a few months will result in a waste of money when you have to move again.

Don’t Buy Anything The Week Before the Moving Day

Wait until you are established in your new place to decide if there is something you really need to buy.

Maybe it’s a can opener and a new oven tray. At least wait until you are in the new place to buy those new pieces. Otherwise, you are likely to buy more than you need.

Your purpose is always to diminish the number of things you have to pack and move.

Food

Forgetting about the food in your fridge is pretty common in the middle of the mess. The flat is full of boxes and plastic bags, everything is packed.

Minutes before you leave, you remember to open the fridge and check if there is something missing. Sadly, the fridge is full.

Try to make a meal plan the week before you leave in and try to include everything you already have.

Time Off Work

We all want to use those holiday days to go on actual holidays or at least enjoy them with a fun plan.

Believe me, you re going to be so grateful to have a few days off before and after you move. Remember you will need some extra time for packing and after you get home, you need more time and energy to unpack everything, clean and find storage for everything.

Which was your biggest mistake when moving flats?

Hi! Yeah, it sucks when you are two days away from the moving day and you run out of boxes because things keep appearing around the place.
      Take care!
