Movies

It’s that Time of the Month… for the Hype

Today is one more day that I get to list a few movies to help you survive the last weeks of the year. Because what a year…

If you are a film lover, disappointed by all the delays and cancellations of new seasons, you may find something you lie in this list. If you have watched some great movies please let me know in the comment section so I can have a look too!

So….what’s your mood like today?

Feeling like watching a Couple kidnapping a Girl?

If the plot doesn’t get your attention you can still give Villains a chance. Two cloyingly sweet lovers break into a home and find a little girl in the basement. Incapable of ignoring this, they try to save the girl and bring her with them.

Despite the plot, this film is mostly a comedy. The golden feature? The small details, from the continuous inside jokes coming from the couple to some funny moments since they get caught red-handed.

Or maybe a TV show about Psycho-rich dudes?

Exit is the most strange show I have watched this year. It’s theoretically based on the real-life of four Norwegian millionaires that found success in their early 20s. The TV show follows their family and professional lives.

The stars in this telecast are as chaotic as dislikable. However, the rawness of this short series covers topics like drugs, personal relationships and mental health from a completely different perspective, which felt pretty refreshing.

Save Yourselves

A young couple goes to an isolated cabin in the forest with the purpose of going through a Tech Detox. Whilst unaware of the world, the planet falls under the attack of aliens.

If you loved Search Party, you will like this movie. It has a very similar style and comes in handy during these times of technology addiction, quarantines and chaos.

The Undoing

A professional therapist discovers that her disappeared husband could be responsible for violent murder.

I started watching this series a few weeks ago, since the release of the first episode. The last one will be released next Monday which means that, if you still haven’t started watching it, you could binge-watch the full show next week. Which is nice, because every chapter ends with a massive cliffhanger.

Wayne

Wayne is an original YouTube series that I found by pure coincidence. If I had to describe this TV show, I would call it a mix of Shameless (US version) and The End of the Fucking World.

After watching the first episode, I was 100% convinced that it was based on a comic. A violent one. There are fierce fights, a lot of blood and the main character’s personality seems to be based on a cartoon.

I ended up subscribing to Youtube Premium (the first month is free) in order to watch the full show and I have no regrets! If you want a break from dramas, tragedies and documentaries and you like the two shows mentioned before you will probably enjoy it.

Weird City

In order to take advantage of my trial subscription to Youtube Premium, I decided to have a look at some of the YouTube original TV productions before I had to cancel it. Weird City had some nice reviews and I decided to give it a try.

Every episode it’s a completely different story, but all of them have one thing in common: the city. Every episode takes place in a modern metropolis which looks like you would imagine a big futuristic city. Hyper technological, full of insane tech-wise citizens with little to no social skills.

I can compare Weird City with a laid back Black Mirror, with happy endings and less dramatic narratives. The fact that every episode has a different tale means that you are probably not going to feel the need to binge-watch in order to fill those questioning endings. I watched one episode in every lunch break as entertainment.

That’s all for today! Now, which iconic movies and tv shows have saved your year?

Sounds like a very good list. I have only seen Villains but all the others sound interesting, particularly those ‘youtube originals’ you mentioned. I didn’t know they made decent tv shows!

  • Jamie

From the list I have only seen Exit. I did like it but I thought it was so weird and uncomfortable at times (although I do enjoy those things lol)

    • Kiira Smith

I agree, there are a few uncomfortable scenes haha nothing weird from a European show I guess haha. Hope you you enjoy some of the other!

Yes! I discovered search party recently, and then I saw save yourselves afterwards. It really is the same sort of ridiculous humour! Loved them, they are extremely underrated!!
