From My Screen To Yours – My Latest Movie Experiences
The 2024 movie landscape is looking good.
In the last few months, I have watched so many movies you could say I am part of the cinema industry by now. With all the different plots unfolding in my mind, I feel like I’m starting to predict (wrongfully) real-life events.
And because I don’t want to be the only weird person in the room, I have to keep moving on with my purpose to make as many people as I can the same as me.
These are some of the best movies and TV shows I highly recommend everyone to watch.
Ripley
I saw the trailer for this TV Show a while ago…and with a heavy heart, I must admit that I skipped it because it’s in black and white.
I remember watching the movie version “The Talented Mr. Ripley” from the 90s, starring Matt Damon. I was a little kid already intrigued with the story of this weird man and his rich friend.
This time, we have this plot as a TV Show, and every episode is a piece of art!
The cast couldn’t be better either, every character plays their role in absolute perfection, so, If you’re like me and doubting it because of the lack of pigment, just go ahead and give it a shot—you might be in for a surprise!
I heard this story is based on a novel, so I might give the book a go.
What You wish For
This movie was the most unexpected movie I have seen this year.
I should start by mentioning that the trailer for this movie is perfect. It doesn’t give away anything, It keeps you guessing – you won’t know what happens until you’re actually watching the movie.
A chef living in London goes to visit his childhood friend and finds out he’s doing much, much better than he expected despite having the same job.
The plot, the dialogue and the entire story kept me intrigued until the last minute!
Late Night with the Devil
I truly appreciate a good horror movie. After watching the trailer, I understood the story touched on subjects like “devil’s possession” and exorcisms. But it was much more than that. The 70s TV broadcast setting gives this movie a truly unique touch.
If you are looking for a different type of horror movie, you should check out this one!
The Nest
This was such a great movie, and yet, it’s so incredibly unknown!
An upper-class family from New York relocates to the London countryside after the father gets a great promotion in the city.
Everything looks perfect in the picture: The gigantic house, the elitist networks and the private schools…until their finances and marriage are affected.
Society of the Snow
You guys recommended this one in one of my previous posts, thank you for that!
A movie based on the real-life events of the Uruguayan plane that crashed into one of the frozen mountains of the Andes. The search for the survivors was abandoned early on due to the high likelihood that they had all passed in such harsh temperatures.
Powerful story about the power of resilience empathy and love for others.
Beautiful Beings
As a cinephile, you eventually come to accept that some movies will dislocate your mind like a bad fall dislocates your shoulder.
That’s the case with Icelandic movies.
The few Icelandic movies I have watched have left a peculiar taste in my mouth. All of them had great stories and casts, but the plots were incredibly dark and some scenes were highly unsettling.
The best way to understand a country, a society, or a culture, is to watch their movies.
All in all, this is a beautiful story of friendship and empathy in an Icelandic Town. A beautiful movie about a group of kids that befriends a severely bullied boy.
Outstanding movie, though I wouldn’t recommend watching it on a Saturday evening with friends just before going to a rave.
The Peasants
The first adult-animated movie I have watched in years! This one narrates the feuds and traditions that our main character, Jagna, has to endure as a young Polish girl living in a poor Polish village in the 19th Century.
Forced to marry an older rich farmer, she can’t avoid her desired love for a younger man (The traditional dances are absolutely stunning!).
Great movie telling a sad story, I can’t believe how much effort was put into creating this movie, and I hope it gets all the credit it deserves!
The Patient
The cast from this movie has already made it the perfect enough selling point by now.
Plot: A serial killer kidnaps his therapist in order to have private therapy sessions every day on his own terms.
I enjoyed watching this easy-to-watch series. The end surprised me a lot, so I am looking forward to a second season!
Baby Reindeer
At this point in the year, I am confident that everyone and their dog have watched the “Baby Reindeer” series and the drama following the incredible success of the same.
If you have not, this one narrates the story of the comedian Richard Gadd, who moved to London to succeed as a comedian but ended up in a difficult situation involving a stalker.

I have seen most of the movies/tv shows on this list, but probably my favourite one would be Ripley.
Interesting, because it looks like it has loads of mixed opinions (about the use of black and white, talking about chemistry between actors, the acting for Freddie…) – I mean, it’s not perfect but I thought it was very enjoyable. This coming from someone who hasn’t watched the previous movie or read the books

It’s true, loads of people talked about the chemistry between the actors…I didn’t notice anything negative. I attributed the entire cast, the story and even the oddness to part of the story’s style.

I am not sure about Ripley…
It took me a long time to get used to the lead actor. Because he is much older than Dickie/Marge
It’s because they’re hoping to adapt the other books as well. He’s significantly older in all the other books, so it made sense to cast an older actor and have him be too old for the first season but be appropriately aged for the other four. I get the decision, but it is really pulling me out of the first season. It’s hard to overlook.

It’s a shame that nobody is going to see it because it’s not on any streaming service (I had to find through certain, ‘less known’ websites)but holy shit, what a tense movie.

What You Wish For is pretty good. Definitely a movie you should go in blind. I’m about half way through it right now and was not expecting the twists and turns so far.

I particularly liked Late night With the devil from this list.
This was a very entertaining film. Oozing with charm, great use of humor, fantastic art direction and set design, and great cinematography. Solid performances from a talented cast. Visual effects were a tad low rent (one thing the movie could have done better!), but I don’t care, it was a small production, they worked just fine. The special effects, on the other hand, were pretty great.

I’m so surprised that some folks prefer the Alive (1993) rendition better. I’ve been obsessed with this story since seeing the trailer (reading two books on it at the moment) and the effort at historical accuracy in Society of the Snow alone makes it the superior film, imo

Baby Reindeer is great. As someone who was abused in middle school and then sought comfort in a relationship that immediately turned abusive and violent in high school, this show taught me a lot about myself and made me feel less alone. These events in my life were a decade ago, but I still question how and why I allowed myself to experience that trauma for so long. When he talks about how trauma makes you an open wound to be exploited by sick people – it’s soooo true. Until I really faced my trauma and figured out my sexuality, I just kept finding myself in compromising situations. I’m sure I’m not the only person who related to that, and it was so powerful to see that representation.
