This Method Helped Me Avoid Temptation

We often end up the day having bought something we didn’t have the intention to buy when we woke up. Or is it just me? This is probably due to the inducement we feel after looking at something that looks beautiful (like flowers) or enjoys using (a new scarf). And then, we need to own it.
Lately, I have taken some steps to improve my life and of course, my spending habits.
Today I want to share my most effective methods to avoid the temptation of buying something.

1. Unsubscribe From Notifications.

This one is, by far, the best decision I could have taken.

I used to receive a large number of marketing emails from different stores/companies every day.

I know that eBay, Amazon or Debenhams (to name a few) just want to remember me that I am a very special customer. Today, they want to enlighten me with some good news: The milk frother that I was checking yesterday is now on sale!

Oh, and I should hurry up, the sale will only be there for 2 days!

On my weak days, I contemplate the email, and I go back to see the final price of the milk frother…I imagine how much foam I would make with it.

I hesitate again, maybe I should buy it now. I don’t know if I will have the opportunity to get it at this price again. Why should I wait any longer?

At the end of the day, I will be saving some money by doing this, right?

Nope.

If you were going to buy a product and happened to be on sale, then lucky you saved a few extra bucks. If you weren’t going to buy it, you lost them.

2. Change Your Way Home.

This one will be especially useful if you live in the city. It’s applied to everyone that walks their way home through their favourite stores on a daily basis.

I remember my way home when I was in High School. I would go past 3 different clothing stores. Being a teenager, it was hard to avoid the temptation of getting inside one of the stores and try something from the New Season.

The days I was feeling upset, I would reward myself and spend some of my pocket money on more clothes.

At the present time, nothing has changed. Living in a big city, It is difficult not to find yourself in front of shops with juicy offers.

I realized that, by simply switching streets, your way home will become more relaxing and lure-free!

3. Focus on Something.

We often buy more things when we aren’t feeling great about ourselves and our respective lives. Maybe we don’t like our job anymore, perhaps we aren’t happy in our relationship. It could also be that we are having a terrible week…

The problem is, we need to identify those pains instead of transforming them into an out of control hoover that fills us with materialistic possessions.

Some researchers show us that sadness makes us buy more. If this is your situation, try to get a hobby you really enjoy. Do you feel good when you are drawing? In that case, all you need is a pen and a notebook.

Maybe you have decided that you want to create a youtube channel or learn about the stock market. In any case, you will be focusing on yourself and your life.

4. Give yourself a few days before you buy it.

Let’s imagine that we fail the previous steps. We got an email, we tripped and clicked the message. There was some amazing item with a discount.

Waiting a few days before buying something is a solid way to know if you really want it or need it. The temptation is likely to leave your mind promptly and, to be fair, the item will be in a sale again.

Which is your most effective method to avoid temptation? Do you have any other tips that we can apply?

Thanks for reading and have an amazing day!
