Documentaries and Movies to Binge Watch During your Quarantine Days

Are you sick of watching Youtube? Tired of the negativity in your mind after reading the news? I have prepared a list with the best documentaries I have watched plus a couple of movies you can enjoy during this pandemic. I hope these shows can at least help you focus your energy and mental power on something else aside from the current disaster.

Tickled

Tickled narrates one of the most strange real stories of all time (or at least the ones that have been recorded).

Did you think rich people were able to get away with almost everything? Well, you were right, and even though some apply this theory to crimes like avoiding taxes, violence and fraud, tickled explores a completely unknown fetish.

Tickling people is a practice we don’t think about too much. And because of that, some have exploited it in the most cautious manner.

The documentary narrated how a guy used his money to pay for movies and recordings that included ticking people. What started in a legal and consented way, ended up creating a domino effect that included threats, stalking and coercing.

Rotten

Great food documentary. It’s not surprising anymore when studies declare that food is one of the more manipulated industries in the world.

Rotten shows everything we don’t see, involving the people that creates the products and factories. It showcases the “behind the scenes” of edibles we consume regularly in a very transparent way.  You can understand the process and treatments of those products we blindlessly buy and eat.

Every episode of this investigative report studies a different product. This is something positive if you are someone who hates long generic food documentaries. You don’t need to watch all the episodes from Rotten. Instead, you can simply watch those that speak about the food items that feed your interest more.

I was in shock after seeing the statistics that show the consumption of honey compared to the real production of the same in the world. The episode about bottled water is also mindblowing for those who are still deciding between the bottled or the tap version.

Chernobyl

Chernobyl feels incredibly familiar.

In 1986, a nuclear accident started provoking aggressive emissions of toxic radiation. Instead of following medical and scientific advice, the government tries to do its best to the toxic emissions without warning citizens. In order to avoid mass panic, the emission reminds a secret for a long time until foreign countries start perceiving the high levels of radiation.

It’s unbelievable to imagine how it felt to live in that place at that time.

Don’t Fuck With Cats

The best for the last! I found this one and couldn’t wait a full day until I watched it. I can’t understand why this documentary isn’t more famous. Don’t F**** Fith Cats is one of the best docudramas I have ever seen.

A guy with a mask publishes some videos of torturing kitties. A group of cat lovers decides to follow his steps in order to get him arrested.

Just wow…The documentary is a rollercoaster of emotions. Every time you think you know what’s next, the story takes a new turn and then you are lost again. The psychopath ended up being in the spotlight of the whole world, but only a few ones followed his steps from the very beginning.

If you only want to watch one documentary, make it this one.

The Purge

I saw the movie and just a few days later, I discovered that there was a TV Show of 2 seasons with the same narrative.

This one is not a documentary and furthermore not based on a real story. It narrates 5 people’s experiences during the only night of the year when Americans are able to kill, torture and portray every type of crime without any legal consequences. Many of them are only trying to survive and protect their families whilst others are using the opportunity to carry out acts of terrorism, revenge and vandalism.

The purpose of this practice is to allow everyone to vent their violent impulses in order to decrease them during the rest of the year.

If we put together the panic buyers, people fighting for paper and the long queues in front of certain gun stores, it doesn’t feel that far from reality.

What would you do if this event became a real thing in your country?

Now, let’s chill and focus on something sweeter and unique

Swallow

A wealthy and highly sensitive housewife starts enjoying the feeling of swallowing unedible items. Lonely and pregnant with a child, his impulses start escalating at a severe pace.

The best movie I’ve watched this year so far.

It’s fascinating, tender and aesthetically pleasing. Despite focusing on a fairly strange pattern, it manages to make you empathize and connect with the main character.

For last but not least, let’s have a laugh!

Dave

A white rapper under the name of “Li’l Dicky” tries to make it in the music industry without results in Los Angeles.

I started watching this comedy show this week. There are only 4 episodes out but I am sure I will enjoy the whole season.

Do you think I should add any other documentary/movie to my list?

Thanks for reading and stay safe!

I have seen all the documentaries on this list and they are all absolutely great. Just to name other personal recommendations on Documentaries from Netflix:

“Gringo” about the bizarre life of anti-virus inventor John McAfee (wild stuff).
“The Staircase” crime doc (if you trust law enforcement be prepared to change your mind).
“Evil Genius” all about the stuff that went on around the “pizza bomber” case (truly crazy).

As opposed, I haven’t seen any of the documentaries you mentioned.
I will have some free time to watch them now, thanks John!

This is really the best moment to pay a bit less attention to the news (it’s all too negative…) and focus on these things.
