Cold Weather Makes My Day

I am currently writing this at one of the Starbucks’ locations spread around Sydney. It’s been a while since my last visit (the iced caramel macchiato tastes different), but today was the perfect day for it.

I can see the rain starting to pour from the window. I didn’t bring an umbrella, and the bus station is a seven-minute walk away, but I couldn’t be happier.

Winter always awakens something in me. Some people are surprised when I express my love for this season, especially given my Mediterranean roots. But a few understand it; they mention the coziness of staying indoors with warm drinks.

While I enjoy the idea of a “hot chocolate and Netflix” plan, I do believe it has to be something more than a simple evening plan.

It also has to be about more than the excitement of wearing fancy coats and cute winter boots, and it probably goes beyond my recent culinary experiments with new soup recipes.

While I believe all those factors play a role, If I had to pinpoint a reason why this weather has such a positive effect on me, I think that it would be because of the contrast.

I wake up every morning in a humid, cold flat and dress in warm clothes. I have been enjoying walking to work, breathing some fresh air, knowing that I’ll be warm as soon as I step into the office. I look forward to taking cautious sips from an extra-hot long black at my comfortable desk. I’ll moisturise my hands with the ‘Sacred Wood and Lavender’ cream I bought in London over a year ago, which I never use during the summer.

And there isn’t a better time to wear my favourite perfumes without worrying about their overpowering effect in the warmth.

At home, from my window, I can see multiple evergreen trees that remain the same all year long. But today, I saw a lonely leaf-shedding tree. Most of its yellow leaves have fallen already, creating a beautiful golden crown on the floor.

And this morning I saw a couple walking by. The girl was taking pictures of this tree from different angles with her phone while the guy scrolled through his own phone, patiently waiting for her to finish.

I’m confident that she, like me, would never have noticed that tree in the summer, when all the green leaves decorate it and blends in with the other evergreens around it.

On the way to the coffee shop, we made a quick stop at the shopping centre. Scrolling around, I walked past the Tom Ford stand and spritzed some ‘Lost Cherry’ on my wrist. I can still smell it now, and it feels perfect for today.

Sometimes I wish it snowed. But I have experienced enough snowed-covered cities before to understand just how uncomfortable that intense freeze can be.

It’s time to go now. We have to stop at the grocery store to buy a few ingredients for the “Cod soup” I intend on preparing today. We’ll probably have it while watching the A24 movie “The Monster”.

I’ll let you know my thoughts! I might add it to the list of movie recommendations I’ll post very soon. Because there isn’t a better weather than winter to write about movies!

I can totally relate to this!

Cold weather is by far better than hot weather. If you’re too cold, you get in bed, get warmer clothes, drink coffee or idk, do something to make it better.

Plus cloudy days are great to take pictures 🙂

Very insightful, winter can be very enjoyable

I wondered if you can help me. I am going to move to Australia, backpacking for a year, and I have been told this about Australian weather. Do you agree?

”Melbournes winter is like an above average London winter
Sydney’s winter is like a nice autumn or spring day
Brisbanes is like a cool summers day
Tasmania may as well just be England all around”

      Hey Fatima,

Your backpacking trip sounds incredibly exciting!
I have only been to Melbourne once, last October, and it was much colder than Sydney.
Just three weeks ago, I was in Brisbane, and the weather was amazing…sunny and warm, even better than London summers (crazy considering it’s winter here).
I agree 100% with “Winter in Sydney is like Autumn in London” (though there is more sunlight too).
I haven’t made it to Tasmania yet, but everyone I know says it’s quite cold, so I’d recommend visiting during the summer months (December to February).

Beyond the weather, I’m sure you’re going to love it!
